Work Related Stress, Is It Affecting You?

Does work related stress have a hold on you? Are you tired of coming home just to further stress about work? Chronic stress has negative effects on our health. It is time to tackle the problem of work stress. Life has enough to deal with let alone bringing the stresses of work home with you.

When considering work related stress many factors associated with work can be the stressor. Wikipedia defines work place stress as... "the harmful physical and emotional response that occurs when there is a poor match between job demands and the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker." This is all too common. Statistics say that 1 in 3 office employees feel overwhelmingly stressed and unhappy in their field because of the demands. What factors lead to work related stress?

Work Stress

Work is just as it is called work, and normally it is difficult. There are specific demands put upon the employee. But, it gets complicated when other factors are thrown into the mix. Such as: Co worker stress, being underpaid, boss problems, difficult working conditions (unclean, dangerous, tension between people, noise, crowding). These issues add on to work related stress. So what are you supposed to do about it. Well you don't have to just grin and bear it anymore.

There is steps to take to manage this type of stress. For each problem you have to formulate a plan of attack.

1. Coworker stress. You can do two things one is address the offender. If someone has offended you or is continuously rude, to you tell them how you feel. Remember to do it in a calm manner. Half of the time the person doesn't even realize they have acted that way. If the problem persists then classify that person as an unavailable person. This person won't be part of your inner circle of friends. They are strictly an acquaintance. You work and cooperate with them but you don't go get a latte with them.

2. Boss problems. If we asked how many people can't stand their boss, I'm sure most people would raise their hands. This is for many reasons, but could be that there is just a misunderstanding between you two? Have you spoken with your boss about the issues you feel are at hand? Always begin a working relationship with open communication. By building a good working relationship with them you can avoid undue work related stress.

3. Difficult working conditions. Contact management about this issue that is where the pull will come. If there is more than just you that has a concern get the others to speak with management as well.

Always with any stressful situation do not try to control factors that are not in your control. This is hard because we all want to feel stress free, so we feel by trying to control the stressor it will be remedied. If there is nothing we can do then we must except it. Turning a blind eye sometimes helps in those type of situations.
