Telomeres, What Are They And How Can You Be Affected?
What are telomeres? What does this have to do with stress and aging? When it comes to questions about the body at times we need to look below the skin Let’s start with the first question. To put it simply they are the very end piece of your DNA chromosome. So what do these things have to do with the stress you feel and how fast you age? We will tell you. Telomeres control the rate at which your cells age. When cell division occurs this piece protects your DNA from any damage to the information it contains. As you age your telomeres get smaller, this is to be expected. What happens is the cell divides and divides reducing in size until finally it reaches the telomere. At this point apoptosis occurs this is cell death. This results in the wrinkling of your skin, muscles weakening, thinking ability diminishes, well you get the picture, you are aging.
Cellular Aging
Being that this is a natural process that we already have to come to grips with wouldn’t it be nice if this process was not sped up or induced unnecessarily? After all who wants to age faster? Chronic stress causes physiological responses in our bodies. This is all normal when we feel stressed, but we are talking about chronic stress. If these physiological responses remain in high alert mode, as they do when we undergo chronic stress, our cells have to protect themselves from this damage. Stress causes oxidative stress within the body this oxidative stress releases pathogens, free radicals, and toxins into the body and it causes a literal war within our cells to keep these harmful substances from penetrating our cell's walls. These effects and others from stress cause the cells to divide in a speedy fashion. This means accelerated aging. Not all the groups of cells divide. The ones that do divide that play a part in the human aging process is; stem cells, skin cells, and others.
Telomerase
Telomerase is a process in which the enzyme telomerase adds small bits back onto the DNA. This elongates the telomere, thus prolonging the life of it. Studies show that telomere activity has a direct impact on our longevity.
