Managing Workplace Stress



Can managing workplace stress be in your control? Do you dread going to work because you know your heart is going to pound, or you will get a headache? This is workplace stress, and it can have an impact on your health if not managed properly.

In times past people have disregarded work place stress, passing it off as just part of the job. While this may be true it is impossible to do away with all stress in the work place. We have ever more reason to be concerned. Large health organizations are taking notice of the growing issue of stress in the work place.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has its own department dealing with this issue it is called the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. This organization along with the American Psychological Association, the Society for Occupational Health Psychology, and other organizations are going to hold a conference on the subject of “Work, Stress, and Health 2009; Global Concerns and Approaches.” All of this is a testament to the seriousness of the growing concern of job stress. It’s time we became aware!

Managing workplace stress should start at home and in your lifestyle. Your emotional and physical health can have an affect on how you manage your stress. This doesn’t mean that you have to reinvent a whole new lifestyle for yourself. Starts by making smarter choices with the food you eat>

A cheeseburger everyday may feel comforting, but it leaves you feeling sluggish, crabby, and unmotivated. Whereas if you eat healthier you will have the energy it takes to face the workday ahead. Stress In The Workplace

When you think of the word managing it entails organization, planning. So by learning some simple management techniques then committing them to your memory for use in the workplace you will be taking the first steps to managing workplace stress.

1.Plan your workload a day ahead. How long will it take you to drive? What exactly do you want to accomplish that day? Break down each task, then analyze how you have been going about your day you may find that you can fine-tune your schedule. An extra 5 minutes start to add up. Each extra minute means an extra minute for you.

2.Prioritize your tasks each day. What task has to be finished that day? What is due at the end of the week? Do the most pertinent tasks first then work through the list. Break the task down into manageable chunks. Each task you accomplish the lighter your load will feel at the end of the day.This is one of the most effective ways of managing workplace stress.

3.Reduce time wasting activities. Like checking personal emails. Anything that does not have to do with your work eliminate it. That doesn’t mean skipping lunch.

4.Balance your schedule. Do not over commit yourself. Learn to say no. After you prioritize plan regular breaks for yourself.

5.Delegate responsibilities to others. If your schedule is full assign others to the tasks.

6.Improve your skills. Everyone has a set of skills, which is why you have your job. By expanding your qualifications you are adding to your value as an employee. Knowledge is power, or in your case it means job security for you.

7.Improve your relationships with your coworkers. By doing this it will not only add to peace in the workplace, but your coworkers will be more likely to help you out in a pinch. Ever hear you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours? The same thought goes for workplace relationships.

8.Be goal orientated. When you are at work you are there to do a job. Well planning manageable goals can help you. Make long term goals and short-term goals.

Remember when Managing workplace stress you may be overwhelmed even at the breaking point, but having a plan of action and putting it into practice can be the difference between stressed out and calm, organized. Of course plan on a period of adjustment. It is unlikely that you can just glance at a list of helpful tips for managing workplace stress and get completely organized and stress free in one week. It takes time to adjust, allow yourself that time. Learn to manage then work to prevent!
