How Does Stress Affect
Human Aging?

Stress can greatly affect the human aging process and can also play a major role in why many people seemingly age a decade “over night”. Before 2005 doctors were still skeptical about the subject, but various studies have now surfaced that give ample evidence of the link between stress and aging.

This link encompasses more than the occasional stressful week at work; the evidence focuses more on chronic stress, an unrelenting stressor that causes emotional and physical distress. This type of stress is commonly caused by exposure to a traumatic event that has taken place in someone’s life. Some common traumatic events include: caring for a seriously ill or handicapped loved one, a traumatic divorce or separation, the sudden death of a loved one, etc.

Cell Damage

Stress causes wear and tear on the entire body. It affects us everywhere; from our brain to our toes. This is because stress has an effect on us at a cellular level. When scientists and doctors took a look at our DNA structure, they found that there is an element of our DNA that controls cellular aging, it is called telomere and it protects our DNA from damaging effects. Chronic exposure to stress causes this element to shrivel and speed up stress and human aging.

Click here to find out how Telomeres affect aging.

Beyond what we personally cope with everyday, our cells are in constant battle against oxidative stress, stress hormones and free radicals. All of these factors contribute to the deterioration of our cellular health and the different systems of our bodies. Our lives can change dramatically in one drastic moment making the effects of stress real to us, and the effects these changes have on our bodies long lasting. Once stress and human aging occur, the effects are difficult to reverse, whereas they could have been prevented if we had put forward a good prevention plan.

Prevent Premature Aging

We are all aging, but aging can happen with grace and beauty if we take the right preventative measures. Our stress levels have a direct impact on how aging occurs. Stress releases stress hormones and free radicals, which cause oxidative stress – a big culprit in human aging! But there are certain things that we can do to help combat these culprits. In order to help our bodies fight the battle, we need to equip ourselves with an antioxidant/anti aging regime.

Antioxidant rich diet for our health and anti aging. When we are stressed it is important to eat healthy foods that promote emotional wellness, the same applies for preventing human aging. Here are some reasons why nutrition is important.

Glutathione levels this is dirctly related to our cellular health.

Physical and mental activity Active individuals tend to look much younger and have much more energy and mental vigor than inactive ones. Exercising our bodies and stimulating our minds greatly contributes to us looking and feeling our best.

Remove the stressors It is important to be mindful of what is causing us stress. Once we realize what stressors are ruling our lives, we can take action in finding ways to remove them. Sometimes all it takes is the conscious effort of acknowledging our stressors before we can eliminate them. Shifting towards a more positive outlook is often an important key.

Aging is a natural part of life that we all need to deal with, but there is no reason that we all can’t all age in a healthy and youthful way, and feel our best through the process.
