Every day we have to take in amounts of different vitamins and minerals to ensure that we have optimized health. The same goes for preventing heart disease, your heart healthy diet plays a big role in. There are specific vitamins and supplements that play different parts in your heart health.

1. Vitamin A. This aids in your body's metabolism. Foods high in vitamin A are; sweet potatoes, spinich, carrots, swiss chard, bell peppers, winter squash. It is important to only take as much vitamin A as your doctor instructs. If you take too much it can cause side effects.

2. Vitamin C. Supports immune function, and helps in reducing stress levels. Foods high in vitamin C are; oranges, broccoli, cantaloupes, kale, cauliflower, lemons. These foods contain an amount of natural antioxidants that help in fighting off oxygen free radicals.

3. Vitamin E. This is a antioxidant. Foods high in Vitamin E are; pistachio nuts, turnip greens, broccoli, mango, spinach, asparagus.

4. Vitamin B. This aids in relieving stress and other functions. Foods high in vitamin B are; salmon, lamb, clams, oysters, mackerel, eggs, Cabbage, Carrots, Onions, Mushrooms (white), Tomatoes.

5. Dairy. Non fat milk or yogurt is the best.

6. Fiber. This is important for your digestive cycle, so that toxins do not build up in your body causing infection and disease. Foods high in fiber are; oatmeal, some cereals, apples, raspberries, bananas, oranges, raisins, barley, rye bread, black beans, split peas, sweet corn.

7. Garlic. Time old remedy. Garlic lowers your cholesterol. Take in from 600-900mgs a day. Or as your physician instructs.

When it comes to a heart healthy diet there are do's and don'ts. The previous list are do's. Now we will share with you some of the don'ts with a heart healthy diet.

1. Do not take in too much sodium. The lower your sodium intake the lower your blood pressure.

2. Do not take in too much fat. Some fats are good. What are they? Unsaturated fats lower blood pressure. Also polyunsaturated fats are good, but keep everything in balance. That is the key in heart nutrition.

3. Do not take in too much caffeine. One cup of coffee is about 85 mgs of caffeine. What you can do is drink black, white, green, or oolong teas. These teas alone are high in polyphenols which is a natural antioxidant. Not all teas contain the medicinal remedies as these teas do. These teas are from the Camellia Sinensis leaves. That is what makes the a natural antioxidant. Thus good for heart nutrition.

Having these tips are great for you, but you are thinking it is a different story when you get into the grocery store. As soon as most of us get there we tend to look for comfort foods for snacking. Remember it doesn't help when you are browsing the isles and you see your favorite bag of chips on sale. Your thinking, sodium what? I want my chips!

Never fear. We have some tips to help you with your heart healthy diet. First, do not go to the store hungry. If you do you will crave everything you see. Oh that sounds good, so does that. Before you know it you have a cart full of things that will not be healthy for your heart.

Second, go with a list. Or a meal plan for the week. Do not deviate from that list. We promise you that you will feel more satisfied with yourself in taking your stand for your heart healthy diet. That is what you call will power.

Remember you are what you eat. If you eat foods that are bad for you, you could end up overweight, unhealthy, and have no energy. Did you ever notice if you eat a handful of blueberries that a few minutes later you have energy. What happens when you eat those chips. They were good, we admit it, but you are bloated, tired, and just want to sit around the house. Do we need to tell you anymore?
