Emotional Symptoms of Stress


Emotional symptoms of stress is an aspect of our health that we should not dismiss so easily. The tendency we often have is to ignore our emotional needs, because life must go on. However, medical studies done over the past decade are alerting us to be aware of our emotional well being, because it is directly related to our physical health.

As individuals we all respond differently to stress. So taking our personal circumstances into consideration is important to determine if you are at the boiling point. In the response to stress our body goes into physical changes called the fight or flight response. Yet there is certain emotional responses we adopt when under extreme stress.

These can also be classified into two groups, fight or flight reactions (not physical response). First group "fight reaction" these emotional symptoms of stress include:

*Angry Outbursts

*Hostility

*Impatience

*Easily frustrated

*Violent outbursts

*Restlessness

*Conflict with Close Relationships

*Compulsive Occupation Changes

These emotional symptoms of stress cause negative and damaging affects to your lifestyle. Most often symptoms lead to rocky relationships, and a sense of self destruction.

Stress Management can aid you or your loved one in combating the development of a behavior.

Mismanaged emotions can develop into what is called stress behavior. This behavior is manifested when a person continually displays the negative fight reactions to the stressor the are faced with.

The second reaction is the "flight" reaction. These emotional symptoms consist of :

*Social withdrawal

*Reduced initiative

*Lack of self esteem

*Excessive crying

*Nervousness

*Anxiety

This set of reactions tend to leave us feeling isolated, and the feeling that no one understands.


We can liken this response to a turtle. What does a turtle do when it senses danger? It pulls itself back into its shell. While that may save it's life, if the turtle doesn't come back out of his shell to eat and drink water it will die. If we develop the same type of isolation responses to stress it can create a behavior pattern in our lifestyle that can be detrimental to our well being.

Emotional Symptoms of Stress is a reaction to processive stress or psychological stress.

It starts with the neurocircuitry in our brain. Stress reaction is picked up by the brain stem. The brain stem sends this processive stressor to the para ventricular nucleus through the limbic system. All this circuits or pulses through our brain causing responses to occur.


What is interesting about this is our limbic system that is deep in our brain is connected to our emotions. When the message is sent that there is danger or "stress" our body reacts with bouts of anger or other symptoms as described. Managing our level of stress is important because chronic stress can cause the body to experience depression. So we can see the seriousness in identifying, prevention, and management of our stress level .

One of the most dangerous issues with stress is our body adapting to it in a negative sense. We may get so used to the feeling that it becomes a normal part of our life. Have you ever heard someone say, "I'm used to the stress, it is just part of my life."? That may be the case but this is dangerous. Our body when under stress can rewire itself making us more vulnerable to emotional and mental illnesses.That really illustrates how serious the emotional symptoms of stress are.

Importance needs to be placed on not waiting until you are at the breaking point. By then your body has already suffered damage to many degrees. Our emotional health cannot be put on the back burner in our lives. The better you take care of yourself the stronger the person you become physically and emotionally.
