Balancing Work And Family Stresses, Can This Be Done?

Is balancing work and family stresses getting more difficult? Do you feel overwhelmed in your responsibilities? If you don’t have a balance you tend to feel incapable or unmotivated. This adds to the stress you already feel. When stress is not managed properly it can have damaging effects on your health.

Work Stress Management

When it comes to work, most of us feel the same right now. You need the work. Maybe you are afraid to speak up because you need this job, or there have been lay offs. It is important though to communicate with your employer or manager. Let them know that you are open to being flexible if they are with you. Of course use discernment if there is someone else that seems to be balancing work and family responsibilities they are probably going to be more empathetic to what you have to say. Also talk to your co-workers. In your particular field others may have some ideas for you.

Job burnout can make balancing work and family stresses even more difficult. Burnout can sneak into other aspects of your life. Getting overwhelmed can cause problems in your family relationships. You may get angry easier, or frustrated, all these negative emotions can cause you to take it out on the people you love the most.

Family Stress Management

When it comes to balancing work and family stresses more is involved in keeping peace in the family then we think about. Everyone even children have a schedule and responsibilities. This can include work, school, household chores, and errands, and of course family recreation. Then we need to think of every individuals needs, this entails what it takes for each individual to feel loved. All of this is involved in the dynamics of family life. Therefore it affects how everyone functions and carries on their individual life.

A practical step in balancing work and family stresses is sit the entire family down and discuss priorities and goals. How does everyone feel? Does the family know and understand how you feel about your weighty responsibilities? Communication is key. Often we think everyone must know how we feel, that is not always the case. Try to explain in all honesty what needs to be accomplished in the week. Explain that if others helped out more then there would be more time to spend as a family. Here are some steps you can discuss.

1. Everyone pitches in. Even children can have responsibilities. They can be taught to dress themselves, or pick up after themselves, put their plate in the dishwasher after dinner. Often we love our family so much that we try to take on more of the load ourselves. This can be good for others, but putting too much stress on you would not create a balance. It is good for children to learn new skills, most children enjoy helping especially if it makes mommy or daddy happy. Make it a game.

2. Have a regular routine. If you establish a regular routine the children will know what to expect at certain times. They might even start the routine without you to help.

3. Get up before the rest of the household to get ready for work. This will help you not feel so overwhelmed with the hustle of the morning. It also means one less person in the bathroom.

4. Prepare things the night before. Set aside 10 minutes at the end of the night for the household to prepare for tomorrow. Then you or the kids might even be able to sleep a few extra winks.
